Crits and Rain don't mix well. Despite the rain, I was ready for it being on my home turf. I had no trouble with the corners. In fact, I was able to corner off the front without using my brakes. That was a boost to my confidence. I only needed to use the brakes while riding near the middle of the pack.

The race started out quickly and never really let up for more than 30 seconds at a time. Indy Hand set an early pace and there were a few short break attempts but nothing materialized. Late in the race, Daniel Houchins pulled away off the front and two of his guys sat on the front. I followed them up because I could see what they were doing. As soon as they set, up I came around them up the hill to chase. I don't know what the deal is, but when I motioned for some help, I didn't get any. They either get tired following me or I must have everyone racing against me. After that, I settled in and let Daniel go. I would either recover and chase again and be toast for the sprint or bide my time and take the sprint. I chose the latter.

I was able to stay near the front as the positioning moves happen going down the hill before the sweeping turns. One guy gapped the field there and the guys behind him didn't close it. I think they wanted a good placing. As soon as we started up the hill, I sprang out in front of them and fought my way up to the gapped rider, grinding all the way. I was closing and that kept me motivated until we met at the line where I threw the bike. I didn't see the tape, but I am told it was by the slimmest of margins and only the throw netted me the field sprint. That's what I hoped to salvage, but I had to do it the hard way.
